Hello everyone! Welcome to another author spotlight! These will be posts where I discuss and showcase, predominantly women and people of color, their writing talents and published works. So without further ado let’s get on with the Author Spotlight!

Meet the Author!

Author Spotlight: Marvay Allan

What’s up! I go by the pseudonym Marvay Allan and I reside in Baltimore, Maryland where I’ve grown up and been about my entire life. I enjoy writing poetry, plays, such fiction as fantasy/science fiction and historical fiction that is mainly focused on African Americans. I’ve always enjoyed using my imagination and my younger brother and I would often make up stories as children then share them with our parents. It was our mother that had us sit down and write. I am a voracious reader and I also enjoy writing lyrics for songs in my spare time as I’ve always loved music.

What and when started your love for writing?

I’ve been writing since I was a kid in my PJs so you could say it comes naturally for me although my mother would make me and my brother write stories when we were young. I enjoy using my imagination and have written poems, stories, and plays. I also enjoy writing song lyrics as well. I feel very dedicated to my craft.

Of all of the book genres, what drew you to write about yours?

aurora lights

Fantasy gives me the greatest opportunity to explore my imagination and that is why I chose to write in this genre. Growing up a lot of the movies I’d enjoy watching were fantasy.

Who is your favorite book character in your stories to write about?

currently have no favorite book characters in my story, however I do find myself becoming intimately involved with many of my characters.

How does being Black impact how and what you write?

Being Black greatly impacts how and what I write. In fact, in a book I’m working on now mermaids are people of color because often in such fantasies the characters just don’t look like us and I wanted to change that. I also recognize as a black writer I am pushing towards recognition in a genre were there are not a lot of fantasy writers in the Black market.

What makes your book(s) special?

My book is special because the leading character is both a mermaid and a princess of color and this is something rare in fiction.

So…what are you working on now?

Right now, I’m working on young adult novel but I will not mention the title as it has not yet been published.
