Hello everyone! Welcome to another Author Spotlight! These spotlights are for showcasing author’s (predominantly women and people of color) writing talents and published works. So without further ado let’s get on with the Author Spotlight!
About the Author:
I am a wife and mom; I am an assistant principal at Sullivan Middle School. As an educator of 12 years, my focus is on overcoming obstacles. I grew up about two hours away from here in Orangeburg, SC. Growing up in high poverty, single-family circumstances helped me develop perseverance and a drive to improve my situation with education. I worked hard in school, which in turn helped me receive a full scholarship to the College of Charleston. I graduated with honor in education and moved up to Charlotte to begin teaching. I taught for 10 years before becoming an assistant principal. As an educator, I am passionate in storytelling and engaging teachers to become better advocates for children. Presentations include Metacognition, Self-Care, Choosing your Battles, and Talk to the Hand: How to handle communication with colleagues and community members. I have presented in Orlando, Nashville, and Rock Hill. I have written 2 children’s books, 3 short stories, and 1 adult novel.
What and when started your love for writing?
I began my love for writing in college. There were not many books for girls like me. So, I began writing but had a long pause. I picked it back up periodically, but more seriously during the pandemic.
Of all of the book genres, what drew you to write about yours?
My life experiences. I’ve been through crazy things and my friends love hearing my stories. So I exaggerated events and turned them into a novel.
If you could meet your favorite author, who would it be and why?
If I could meet my favorite author it would be Ralph Waldo Emerson but it was a toss up between him and Henry David Thoreau. They are in my eyes one in the same I’d love to meet Chimamand Ngoze. I began reading her books when I first began teaching and became hooked. I love her style!
What makes your book(s)/writing special?
What makes my books and writing special is the fact it came from a place of pain and through that process I was able to heal myself. Sometimes it takes a great deal ofI think the ease of reading and the relatability makes my writing unique.
So…what are you working on now?
I’m working on 2 books right now One about a bookstore owner struggling with memory lapses and the other a collection of love short stories. I’m excited!
