Hey everyone! Happy Valentine’s Day! Amour Books is coming to a close, but we have one more blog post to share. Today we are going to be talking about the different types of romance book gernes. So, let’s get on to the lists!
Contemporary Romance
The book is referred to as contemporary romance because it takes place during the time frame in which it is published. This means that a love story dominates the plot. Romance novels set in a contemporary world are considered contemporary romance novels. An account does not have to be placed too close to its publication year to be considered current. There are situations in which characters already know one another. This means that they do not have to meet awkwardly or adorably. There is always a series of events that will test or stress their relationship. There will be a trigger event during the change from platonic to romantic feelings.

Erotic Romance

It’s time for sexy time! Erotic romances focus on developing a romantic relationship with more explicit sex. A character’s sexual encounters in a love story are described in this writer’s opinion. Despite the fact that sexual content is not essential to the storyline, character development, or relationship development, it could be easily removed or toned down without damaging the plot. Reminder: Exotic romance is different from erotica. The line between erotica and romance is blurry. In Erotica the story revolves around characters who might fall in love.

Historical Romance
Historical romance is a great love of mine. I just love old timely love stories! There are a number of romance genres to be found in this broad category, yet all of the settings are to take place in the past, usually the 19th century and before. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite stories and books of all time!
Yet it is not a historical romance. The book was written in 1812 and was published in 1813, so it was contemporary romance of that time. If the book was set in 1700, it would be a historical romance. The setting has to be past in the past compared to when it was actually written (and usually this is 50+ years prior to the book’s creation).

Religious and Spiritual Romance
These are love stories that have either overt or subtle beliefs throughout. In most cases, it is based on Christian beliefs. These books are sometimes also called inspirational romances or Christian fiction because of the characters and overt themes that deal with the Christian faith.

Romantic Suspense
Ohh…suspense! A romance that features a mystery, suspense, or thriller plot is considered romantic suspense. Thrillers provide entertainment by making their viewers feel frightened and anxious at times, generating moments of suspense. There are many types of romance thriller, but a romance thriller combines elements of both romantic fiction and thriller fiction.

Well, that’s all I have. I hope that helps clears somethings up for those who are confused about the different types of romance. I know I there are many more romance subgenres like Young Adult Romance, and Paranormal, Sci-Fi, or Fantasy Romance, but I didn’t want to continue going down this endless black hole. I hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day! And don’t forget:
Live. Love. Laugh.
