Julie Kusma, author of Stuck That Way and Other Quandaries, Shift: 11 Perspective Changing Meditations, and Unbind: 7 Chakra Opening Meditations, lives in Kentucky with her family and Goldendoodle, Finn. She writes speculative fiction, mainly paranormal horror short stories and novels. She holds a Master of Science in Health Education and a Master of Art in English, Creative Writing, Fiction.

What and when started your love for writing?

The what of the question is easier to explain than when it began. Story concepts pop in my head out of nowhere. Often the whole story, characters’ names and all, simply appear in my mind like a bubble loaded with information. I pull this apart like a schematic drawing and begin the work of writing it down.

I have written stories the other way around, especially for contests where parameters are provided, and the story’s bubble coalesces around these points. I have had friends mention things and thought I might write a story around it. This is a slower formation, but the bubble still appears. They are in my head and I have to write them down, and I do love it.

Of all of the book genres, what drew you to write about yours?

My mother died when I was very young, and this event triggered a questioning within. Why are we here? What is our purpose? I became fascinated with all things metaphysical, philosophical, and occult. Most of my stories center around these themes, so speculative fiction, mainly paranormal horror, is my genre.

What’s your favorite Halloween/Horror/Mystery story or character?

I have many. No Halloween is complete without watching Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic, and Sleepy Hollow. However, my favorite is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Her gothic novel centers around life and death, and the interplay science has on society. This is right up my alley, but my work focuses on psychological aspects.

If you could meet your favorite author who would it be and why?

Again, I have many favorites that I read and study their writing styles. This may seem strange, but I don’t know that I want to meet them. I would prefer to meet an author who is great at marketing their material. In that situation I would find many questions worth asking.

What is one thing about Halloween or the spooky season that you can’t stand?

Oh, I love all things Halloween and spooky. Now I have preferences when decorating. I like vintage Halloween, but I appreciate all expressions of spookiness.

What makes your book(s)/writing special?

I think my writing has a unique style, though I suppose most writers might answer that way. I’ve read in Amazon reviews for my book that I present “a new take on horror and writing as a form of art,” and I’m “a master storyteller of the macabre” as well as the “quintessential horror goddess.” That’s a high bar to maintain, but I feel up for the challenge. .

So…what are you working on now?

I have multiple projects open, but I’m incredibly excited about my collaboration with Jacqueline Belle @JBelle_Poems and Daniel Lacho @GuruArtOffical. Jacqueline does excellent voiceover work, and Daniel handles production masterfully.

For Halloween, we have joined forces to create two unique pieces. One is a story cycle based on my six-word stories. If it’s been done before, I haven’t seen it. The other is an exclusive horror story I wrote for the #StorytimeForGrownups Halloween special and prompted the hashtag #GorytimeForGrownups

For a taste of what’s lurking about, check out the promo video made by Daniel Lacho for those two pieces at https://t.co/rbVwXFkUyr?amp=1
