Author Spotlight: Davon Ansley

Hello everyone! Welcome to another author spotlight! These will be posts where I discuss and showcase, predominantly women and people of color, their writing talents and published works. So without further ado let’s get on with the Author Spotlight!

Meet the Author: Davon Ansley!

I was born and raised in Dade City, FL, where I first found my love of writing in the tenth grade while taking a creative writing class.  It was one of the few classes I did well in lol.  About ten years later, I started writing my first book “Self-Control” and after I finished writing that book I started submitting it to literary agents, trying to get signed.

Long story short, everyone either rejected me or ignored me.  I didn’t get discouraged, I continued on writing novels and decided to become a self-published author. Releasing my first book-ever entitled, “Living…”, through the good and bad I appreciate everything that has come my way during this first full-year process of being an independent author. I look forward to my future career in writing because I know it’s going to be up from here!

How did your writing journey start?

My writing journey started in the tenth grade after taking a Creative Writing class.  I knew that I had something special in writing and knew I needed to do something with it.

Living is structured around 10 themes with 10 poems each. What inspired you to organize the collection this way, and how did you choose the themes?

I was inspired to structure Living… my novel with 10 subjects along with 10 poems each because I wanted to build the climax for the reader.  I wanted to touch as many subjects as I could.  It was sort of like a beautiful written “freestyle”.  But at the end, I had to make it clear for everyone that decided to give this book a read.

What inspires the themes and emotions you explore throughout Livingโ€ฆ?

Everyday activities inspire emotion and themes, I wanted it to be as transparent as possible and no hidden agendas, honest conversation.

Was there a particular poem in Living that was especially emotional or difficult for you to write? If so, why?

There really was no particular poem that got me in my feelings.  If anything I wanted the reader to pick up the gems that I give for free.  Some of the poems are based on real life experience and others are things that I already knew but didn’t experience first-hand.

How did releasing Living change the way you view yourself as a writer or as an artist?

It changed me as a writer, in the way that I can have range and not be just an ordinary writer trying to do the same old same as others.  I have my own voice and know I can do anything in writing if I put my mind to it.

Your writing often touches on growth, resilience, and navigating modern life. What message do you hope readers carry with them after finishing Living?

A message I want readers to carry with them is they’re not alone.  I can be a little selfish at times, but once I get out of my own head, I realize that everything is going to be ok.  Much like my book, it’s a good, happy vibe, not everything has to be so serious.

Do you see yourself continuing with poetry, or are there other genres or formats you want to explore in the future?

I can see myself continuing on with poetry, maybe not soon, but writing is a part of me.  I want to explore urban fiction / drama for my next book release.  I have multiple books that I have written and would like to publish two more.

So…what are you working on now?

I am working on promoting my current novel “Living…”. I want millions around the world to know my name and work.

Thank you all for reading and remember:

Live. Love. Laugh.
