What and when started your love for writing?
My love for writing came when I began to write with my kindergarten students. I began to teach them how to think of thoughts that were in their minds and put them on paper. Of course they did not know exactly how to put them into words but they drew pictures that displayed what they were thinking and they turned into stories. As I watched their imagination grow and become real, I began to motivate and encourage myself to do the same with my own thoughts and creativity birthing A Walk Down Phonics Lane!

Of all of the book genres, what drew you to write about yours?
My focus when writing this book was to ignite the mind and imagination of little readers. By doing this I have begun with the genre of Fiction. I did this so that my little readers would understand that what is within their minds and imagination also matters, no it does not have to be real but it can still be a part of your journey of learning. Stimulating the mind and imagination of children provides the opportunity for future readers and writers to form.
If you could meet your favorite author who would it be and why?
Wow this is a tricky one! I would love to sit down and talk with Crystal Swain Baits, as she is an amazing children’s author and has truly been a prominent individual in the self publishing world.
How does being a Black author impact what you write?
Being a Black author drives me to continue to ensure that representation takes place for our community of color. I am motivated and driven to be the source that provides literature and reading that serves as a place for and of diversity for children, parents, and educators. With this done we are providing children the chance to see that we are all different but we are all important.

What makes your book(s) special?

I consider my book to be special as it is engaging, filled with learning opportunities for children and parents and allows space for creativity to dewell.
So…what are you working on now?
I am so excited to be working on book number two, which is planned to be released next year. It is the sequel to book one, and all my readers are looking forward to finding out what happens next! If you don’t have the first one run over to get it so that you will be ready to see what is next!
