Winnifred Tataw creates a high fantasy background that has a modern tinge woven into the mythology. Dragon-human hybrids, magic, and gods are paired with modern conveniences such as a phone and Ready To Eat meals to create an original and relatable fantasy world. The book contains stories of the earth at the beginning that serve as reference guides to the lore and as stepping stones to lead you throughout the world. The reference guides introduce you to the gods, the acolytes, and the people of the earth, which allows you to see the different aspects of the world before ever meeting Prince Roderick. The story weaves between Roderick’s perspective and various characters in his life including his family and Princess Arcelia. A fast-paced high fantasy, Child of Tempus blends rich mythology and a vivid setting as the background to a harrowing adventure and a coming-of-age story.

In her fantasy writing, Tataw hits all the right chords without succumbing to cliche. Magical gadgets, a reluctant Chosen One, a villainous megalomaniac, Child of Tempus takes everything great about fantasy without the tiresome whiteness found in classics. Especially in genre fiction, I accept the default as white. Even in fantasy works where anything is possible. Tataw disrupts my assumptions and gives me melanated princesses and princes.

This book has a great plot that goes in unexpected ways. It’s not predictable by far. The characters also feel real and grow throughout the story, which is good to see. Also, I love the dialogue throughout. It feels authentic. Overall, this book sets up a great beginning to the series. (P.S. As an asexual, I like the asexual reference in it.)

This is a lot of information. But it’s magical so don’t let that put you off. The character’s have wonderful personalities. This book needs to have a second edition with tons of illustrations! I want to visit this world, for real.
