Hello everyone! Welcome to another author spotlight! These will be posts where I discuss and showcase, predominantly women and people of color, their writing talents and published works. So without further ado let’s get on with the Author Spotlight!
Meet the Author!
I am Author Jill Shawntaye Kapri born in Tallahassee, FL. I’m from Chattahoochee, Florida. I have been writing since I was 9years old. I picked up a pen for the first time at nine years old when I wrote a poem to my father after he was killed. Since then I have written more poetry. I began reading urban fiction books. I began to cross over and try my luck at writing urban fiction short stories. I’m currently self-published. I have one book out titled Hoes In Da Hood. Part 2 of that book is releasing this July 31st.
What and when started your love for writing?
My mom used to buy me diaries and journals. When I was nine years old my father was killed. I remember sitting on the steps of my apartment complex with my journal and I started writing him a poem letting him know how much I missed and loved him but I made sure that each ending had some sort of rhyme. That was the beginning. As I got older around fifteen I started reading urban fiction books and that’s when I knew it was something I wanted to do.
Of all the book genres, what drew you to write about yours
I started reading Wahida Clark’s Thug Series and then got hooked on Ashley Antoinette.
I was already familiar with similar books in that genre so I went for it, Not only do I write Urban fiction-drama and romance. I’m also planting my seeds with Non-fiction. I don’t want to write be a one genre Author I want to do it all.
If you could meet your favorite author who would it be and why?
I have two favorite Authors lol I can not just meet one and not the other as I mentioned earlier I’m a huge fan of Wahida Clark and Ashley Antoinette. I would love to meet them one day because it’s not everyday you take a young girl from the hood and she makes a name for herself through pen and paper picture painting. They gave me that motivation to do so and I would love to thank them in person for paving the way for so many women and aspiring authors like myself.
What is your biggest struggle as a writer?
My biggest struggle was consistency. I had so many things going on in my life I wasn’t being consistent with my writing. Now my mind is focused and I do not plan on stopping anytime soon.
What makes your book(s)/writing special?
When I write my books I picture paint. When I write my poems I paint pictures. Writing is who I am. The story may be told a million times but when I tell it I can guarantee you it will not be told the same.
So…what are you working on now?
I have two books I’m promoting now Hoes In Da Hood Part 1 and 2. I’m also in the process of writing a non-fiction book titled A Shameful Pain along with a poem book titled The Keys Of Palm Trees.
