Hi everyone! Happy Friday! So this is my new post in my Class on Life Series. Today we will be talking about, you guessed it, cooking! Something every person should have some basic knowledge in. Warning this blog is a bit long. Without further ado, lets get right in to it!

What you are going to learn:

  • Microwaving (yes this is a thing)
  • Baking
  • Frying
  • Grilling and Broiling
  • Sautéing
  • Water Heating Methods

How to Microwave:

Rule one: read the microwave instructions on the back of the food you wish to microwave. Rule two: read the microwave instructions on the back of the food you wish to microwave! Never put metal or aluminum cookware in the microwave! Food should always have a microwave-safe lid on it. To avoid “cold spots” on your food, move the food around during cooking. Pause the microwave to stir sauces, flip over the meat, or rearrange vegetables.

How to Bake:

Baking is usually associated with food items that need batters and doughs. Some examples are bread, cookies, pies, and muffins. Most of the baking is FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS! Your food will come out if there are changes made in any place of the instructions. If you’re new at baking try simple recipes, like cookies or brownies. Make sure you have the essential bake wear when baking. Don’t use liquid measuring cups to measure dry ingredients. Keep everything separate. And be patient! Baking anything must a lot of patience if you want your dish to come outright.

How to Fry Foods:

Pan frying is very similar to sautéing. Both involve cooking food in a pan, using oil. However, pan frying is used for larger pieces of meat, like chicken breasts, steaks, pork chops, etc.

Shallow frying is when oil typically reaches about halfway up the sides of the food being cooked. This is used for cooking  fried chicken, battered shrimp and eggplant parmigiana.

Stir frying is when the food is cut into small pieces and cooked in oil in a wok.

Deep frying involves completely immersing the food in hot oil. The coating of oil allows it to cook evenly on all sides. It is used to cook items such as battered foods (chicken), French fries, and donuts.

How to Grill/Broil

The difference between the two, is broiling the heat source is from above. While grilling is from below. Grilling or broiling is a good choice for tender cuts of meat, chicken, and fish. Marinating means soaking food in a liquid or dry seasoning before cooking it. It is to help tenderize the meat and add flavor. The food will need to turn or flipped over during grilling/broiling to ensure it’s cooking on both sides. Barbecuing is grilling, with BBQ sauce added to the mix at any of all the stages of grilling.

How to Sauté

This is a quick-cooking method that has cooking food in a pan, over high heat. With sautéing, the most important rule is that the pan heated to a high temperature before adding the food. Omit foods that can be sautéed, almost anything can be. Except for thick or tough cuts of meat (shank or brisket), roast chickens, or hard root vegetables. To check if the pan is hot enough, add a couple of drops of water to the pan. If they sizzle and evaporate in a couple of seconds, the pan is hot enough.

How to Cook with Water Heating Methods

In all of these methods listed below are easy and simple ways to cook. All of them just require you to be watching the food as it is cooks, and the temperature of how hot your water is.

Boiling can be a violent cooking method, as the bubbles of vapor moving through the water can damage delicate food.

Poaching is the gentlest form of cooking items like fish and eggs in water.

Slow boiling is when the water reaches a boil of 100°C or 212°F. It is slightly more vigorous than a simmer.

Steaming is a very gentle form of cooking, for delicate foods like fish and vegetables. It is also a very healthy form of cooking. Steaming is a relatively fast cooking method since it is conducted at such a high temperature. Steamer inserts are also available at most kitchenware stores and are the way to properly steam food.

How Do I Name My Fantasy Books?

    June 9, 2021 by

Hey everyone how are you doing? It’s week two of Build-A-Book. If you don’t know what that is, check out my last blog here. As I’ve been buzzing about this week being about book naming. So keep reading to learn how I name my fantasy books. It’s all in the family All of my book titles have a word that references family. That’s because family and family dynamics are a big part of the series. My books are very character-driven and family relationships are a prominent reason why. How many of the characters are the way they are is because of the environment their family has raised them in or put them in. May the Gods watch over you In my book title’s the Gods of the fantasy story. There are four gods in the series, Space, Time, Life, and Death. And every book is based around one or two gods. At first Child of Tempus was supposed to be Child of Time. Which still could’ve worked, but it didn’t captivate me like the latter did. And so, after naming book one with a God’s name in the book title, I thought I’d do it for every book afterward. Yeah…no.… Read more

    Write With Me!

    March 22, 2021 by

Hi everyone! How are you? As you may or may not know I have started writing the fourth book and the Gods’ Scion series. I’m so excited to start this new chapter, literally. But this time around I’m doing things differently. I want to you write book four with me! I wanna get you guys involved with me. More than I’ve ever done before when writing a book. Everything from my draft to editing to book naming to the release. I want you guys my readers and audience to have some hand in it. I also want to be sharing tips struggles achievements I go through and this book writing to the publishing process. So what’s the plan? I noticed that as I wrote a book I didn’t really incorporate who the book was for. What I mean is the reader I didn’t really engage with them until it was time to release the book cover, or book video, or book publishing date. So I really want to focus on engaging the readers and viewers and hopefully getting more people excited and interested in the book series and my writing work/process. In the last year, I’ve gained more followers readers… Read more

  • Nature’s Natural Beauty

    February 26, 2021 by

Hello everyone! Welcome to another blog and my first drawing blog for Win’s Books. As I told you guys on my social media I wanted to start adding more of my artwork onto the blog since it was one of the main reasons why I created it in the first place. If you have been following my Instagram you have seen some sneak peek photos of what I’ve been doing this semester in my art classes and what I will be doing in the future pertaining to my art. So a little background on this collection, this was last semester’s drawing class finally I did. These pieces are called “Nature’s Natural Beauty.” It’s about showing the beauty of different ethnic women and natural states. I made sure to pick models and photos of women with little to no makeup. Many cultures also value hair as a show of status, beauty, and self-love. Women of Color in history have been dehumanized and features, so I wanted to draw attention to those by showing them in an appealing light. The plants I used are from areas where these women are from regionally. While the movements of environmental protections on the raise and… Read more

    Happy Birthday Child of Tempus!

    January 18, 2021 by

Hey everyone! It’s Child of Tempus’ 2nd Birthday!!! I can’t believe two years have passed since publishing my book. I had NO idea what I was doing but, I’ve been able to learn and grow from so many in the writing and indie author community. And I thank you all! I wasn’t able to do something big this year for Tempus’ terrible two’s but I hope next year I will be (*wink wink*) Since CoT’s release, I have released two other books apart of my YA fantasy series, The Gods’ Scion. CoT even got its book cover revamped, which I totally love! I have been able to grow as a writer from the countless feedback and reviews I’ve received for my book over the years. And though I know CoT isn’t perfect and has its flaws, it’s my baby and will always have a special place in my heart. Child of Tempus laid the groundwork for all my books to come, and I believe things will get better as I continue to write and release new books. Without CoT I wouldn’t have started this blog and had met all of you, so I owe it to CoT for all the… Read more

So you’ll need: Okay now that we got all of our materials, let’s get started! 1. drill holes in the bottom of your “pots” 2. add your sand and soil to the pot *the ratio of sand and soil depends on you, the pot, and your plant’s needs. 3. Writers Week (-ending)

    August 28, 2020 by

Hi everyone happy Friday! This week was my first week back in college and my first Writers Week! All this week (Aug 24th-Aug 28th) I did a week of author spotlights and poetry, showcasing some of the most unique authors and writers I’ve met in a while. And surprisingly, I learned a lot! What will you be adding to the next Writers Week? I’m thinking that the next Writers Week will not only host authors but other bloggers. I intend to have more guest blogs and blogs about writing too. And maybe adding in some character interviews (*wink*… Read more

  • The Author’s Guide to Character Types

    July 21, 2021 by

Hey you! How’s it going. For this week, and the follow, for BBU: Build-a-Book we are discussing book characters. We are going to be diving into my guide to character types. I hope this article will be helpful to other aspiring authors, in how they construct their book characters. (All sources are linked). Now without further ado, let’s get into the guide! What is the difference between Character Types and Character Roles? It might not seem like it but there is a (small) difference between a character type and character role. Thought others may argue that they are one in the same. It all depends on the author’s perception. For me I do separate the two, but I can understand why others don’t. A character role is the purpose a character serves in a story. The would be the protagonist/hero, antagonist/villain, love interest, etc. A character type is who/what the character is; their persona if you will. There are many different character types, but I’ll be discussing the most common ones I and other authors write about. Round Character A round character is a prominent character who demonstrates the fluidity and the ability to shift from the moment we meet… Read more
